I. Coventry University
The Fashion course is an exciting practice based course that encourages the application of skills, the investigation of theory and the opportunity for critical reflection. It is a broad based course with opportunities for students to explore a wide range of intentions within the area of Fashion in addition to event management, visual merchandising, digital fashion, jewellery and accessory design. Over recent years the accessories market has exploded globally, from couture and designers right down to the high street market, and the fashion industry has seen the potential to build sales by adding accessories to the mix.
The traditional Fashion graduate, proficient in the skills of pattern cutting and manufacturing etc., needs to become a flexible, creative and global practitioner, with capabilities focused on skills acquisition and evaluation. With the advent of social media the business of marketing and PR has changed and Fashion graduates now need yet another set of skills and the course needs to reflect these changes in the Fashion industry. Fashion blogging is now an established profession, the use of social media to promote brands and events, the expansion of e-tailing and successful bricks and mortar retailers all now have an online presence, all this is opening different opportunities for graduate employment.
The Fashion course is very industry focused and as such has very strong links with regional and international employers. The course team have a wealth of contacts in the industry and the shape of the course is directed by changes in the industry and the needs of employers.
The Fashion course is therefore contextualised by global trends in the Fashion industry, specifically within the Asian markets and students are encouraged to take part in collaborative / group projects enhancing their multicultural awareness and strengths as global practitioners.
A key aspect of the programme is employability and students are encouraged to undertake industry experience and to pursue professional links through project work and all other aspects of their university experience. This reflects the Raffles Education Corporation’s Values and Culture statement; promoting professional excellence for employability.
Staff research, practice and expertise feed into the course's qualities and characteristics. These chime with Coventry University's Mission Statement to provide outward-facing research with impact, to provide high-quality teaching, and to be dynamic, global and enterprising.
